Karla Hrabar, Tesco Health & Beauty Sales Team Leader, for Procter & Gamble UK/Ireland has been named in the 2014 Power Part Time List: a roll call of 50 powerful UK business leaders - who all happen to work part time or flexibly. Karla is joined in the Top 50 list by leaders from companies including BBC, Deloitte, Diageo, Google, HSBC, Microsoft, Morrisons, PWC and SKY.

The 2014 Power Part Time List has been put together by Timewise (timewise.co.uk) a leading social business that is building a visible market for good quality flexible jobs in the UK, following a nationwide search.

Co-founder Karen Mattison MBE built the list to champion modern day patterns of work, trailblazing individuals who are forging the way for others and their employers. Karen publishes a list annually prove ‘what’s possible’ when you work part time or flexibly – and that our concept of what a part time job is, or can be, is changing.

The initiative has the backing of EY, Regus and 7 executive search firms.

Karla works 4 days a week, choosing to do so following the birth of her baby girl in April 2012. On returning to work from maternity leave, she wanted to better balance her new family life and maintain her career ambitions with P&G.

A strategic sales leader heading an account team of 9 people, Karla and her team continually exceed all revenue expectations. Testament to her managerial skills, all of Karla’s former direct reports have asked her to remain as their mentor when moving departments. Additionally, the team she led prior to her Tesco role was named P&G’s ‘Team of the Year’ in the UK for the first time under her leadership. Karla was offered her current position on a part time basis on return from maternity leave, and her success has led to other high profile P&G roles being structured so they can be worked flexibly.

P&G’s flex@work programme, a breakthrough new way of thinking about flexible working styles, enables individuals to customise their work schedule in partnership with their immediate manager, supporting a culture that enables a truly flexible workforce and allows P&G to attract, retain and get the very best out of the very best talent available.

Timewise conducted both the nationwide call to action for nominations in June, calling upon the public to nominate inspirational individuals they knew, who work part time / flexibly at senior levels. Founder Karen Mattison led the judging panel which included:

  • Steve Varley, managing partner for the UK and Ireland of EY
  • Karen Blackett OBE, the CEO of MediaCom
  • Andy Saunders, Deputy Editor of Management Today magazine
  • Katie Bickerstaffe, CEO of Dixon’s Retail plc in the UK and Ireland
  • Lynn Rattigan, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of EY

After hearing from hundreds of people, the judges compiled a list of 50 deemed to be the most outstanding. The list is not ranked or numbered in any way.

Karla Hrabar says: “I’m honoured to have been included in the Timewise 2014 Power Part Time List. Thanks to the flexibility and support from P&G, I’ve been able to make the right choices for my family and continue my career with the company. It’s been the perfect situation for me and I hope that, by opening up about my own personal working patterns, I can help others – men as well as women – who need to balance work and personal life commitments, to make the right choices for their circumstances.”

Timewise co-founder and judge Karen Mattison MBE, who led the initiative from the start says: “Karlaand the others on the list are great examples of how work in the UK is changing. In sharing their stories they help to change the conversation, from what is ‘not possible’ when you work flexibly - to what is. The Power Part Time Listers are paving the way for future generations. We hope that they inspire others to open up about their patterns of work.”
