New Era in Circular Economy: Launching a Unique Recycling Technology "Made in the EU" that Upcycles Nearly 100% of Used Diapers

The upgraded recycling technology developed by Fater is uniquely able to sanitize and separate used diapers and upcycle them into secondary raw materials like plastics, cellulose, and absorbing material. EMBRACED brings a consortium of 13 partners together to create capability how to turn recycled cellulose from used diapers into bio-products in a way that creates value.

ROME
"Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) has been created to help develop a sustainable and competitive bio-based industry in Europe. We firmly believe in the capacity of our European industries to play a leading role in this sector."

Rome, July 4th - A new era in sustainability and a new best practice in circular economy was announced today in Rome by the EMBRACED Consortium; an EU-funded initiative that promotes the recycling of absorbent hygiene products, and create ways how to transform into higher value materials such as fertilizers and bio plastics. Fater – a Joint Venture of P&G and Gruppo Angelini – upgraded its existing diaper recycling technology to now upcycle used diapers into secondary raw materials like plastics, cellulose and absorbing material and enable their use in higher value applications.

The EMBRACED Consortium has received funding from the European Union (Bio Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) under Horizon 2020) to realize in the Netherlands with the partner AEB Amsterdam a highly innovative project that helps progress in circular economy. Its main goal is to create capability how to turn recycled secondary raw materials from used diapers into bio-products such as bio-plastics, fertilizers and high-end chemicals.

Giovanni Teodorani Fabbri – Fater AHP Recycling General Manager commented: “At Fater, we strongly believe in the potential of the circular economy of diapers recycling, as testified by several awards received in Italy and by the support of the European Commission. We started with diaper recycling in 2015, and EMBRACED represents a significant step forward, further encouraging us in our commitment to circular economy and in the development of a new venture that will start with the upgraded technology at our plant in Treviso, in collaboration with our partner Contarina.”

Secondary raw material

The EMBRACED meeting in Rome brings partners together to develop ways how to bring this to life. It includes logistics, conversion into new materials, an enabling legislative framework, and the scaling of the recycling technology.

Philippe Mengal, Bio Based Industries JU Executive Director announced: “Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) has been created to help develop a sustainable and competitive bio-based industry in Europe. We firmly believe in the capacity of our European industries to play a leading role in this sector.”

Today's announcement is the result of a public-private partnership project led by the EMBRACED partners, and supported by Fater’s shareholders, P&G and Gruppo Angelini.

Roberto Marinucci, P&G Vice President Global Baby Care, Wipes, and Sustainability, and Member of the Fater Executive Committee said: “At P&G, we serve nearly 5 billion people around the world and have one of the strongest portfolios of trusted, quality and leadership brands. In order to continue serving the world’s consumers, we believe, and have publicly committed to doing what is right and being a good corporate citizen. Environmental Sustainability is in line with P&G’s mission to improve the quality of life of the consumers now and for generations to come. It is an essential part of P&G's daily work, and an opportunity for growth, innovation and leadership. P&G believe that diaper recycling is good for our consumers, good for the planet and good for business. It fits with our vision on zero waste. As a company committed to doing the right thing, we are taking leadership in this project.”

Detailed Quotes:

Philippe Mengal, Bio Based Industries JU Executive Director announced: “Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) has been created to help develop a sustainable and competitive bio-based industry in Europe. We firmly believe in the capacity of our European industries to play a leading role in this sector. The EMBRACED project will bring a significant added value to the initiative by exploring the untapped potential of a significant portion of municipal solid waste, absorbent hygiene products. Finding a solution to upcycling these items is particularly important and this is one of the two first BBI JU demonstrators on municipal solid waste. The EMBRACED consortium comprises several brand owners who through their participation create a tremendous opportunity to increase the impact of bio-based industries in Europe through reaching mass-market consumers. Indeed, one of the main challenges faced by bio-based products is winning the consumer’s confidence in terms of safety, cost and performance. I am confident this project will help demonstrate how bio-based solutions can become a concrete reality in every-day life of EU citizens.
