Leading children’s hospice charity, Shooting Star Chase, has teamed up with consumer product company, Procter & Gamble, to help bereaved families leave a lasting memory of their child at the hospice.

The Weybridge-based company whose brands include Ariel, Pampers and Gillette, have chosen Shooting Star Chase as their local charity of the year and employees at the Procter & Gamble headquarters hope to raise over £30,000.

The vital funds raised will enable the refurbishment of the remembrance garden at Christopher’s – Shooting Star Chase’s hospice in Guildford – The Mistral Garden is a special area where families whose child has died can go for tranquillity, reflection and solace – and to memorialise their loved one by placing a personalised pebble in the stream.

Over time the area has become full and Shooting Star Chase has been unable to offer over 70 families the opportunity to place a pebble in memory of their child. With the help of Procter & Gamble, the charity will be able to renovate the garden and purchase a Memory Tree – a sculpted copper tree which enables all bereaved families to place personalised, engraved leaves on the tree.

Simon Beresford, Head of Corporate Fundraising, says:

“We’re really excited about working with Procter & Gamble and feel honoured to be accepted as local charity of the year by such a prestigious organisation. Their support in providing a new memory tree and refurbished garden will mean so much to bereaved families who are going through an indescribably difficult time.

“The remaining funds from Procter & Gamble after the refurbishment of the Mistral Garden will contribute towards the charity’s nurse’s wages - ensuring we can continue making every moment count for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions across London and Surrey.”

Irwin Lee, Vice President & Managing Director, P&G UK, says:

“We’re proud to be supporting Shooting Star Chase this year. As a company we recognise the responsibility and opportunity we have to give back and make a difference in the communities in which we live and work. Shooting Star Chase do amazing work to help and support families through such difficult times and everyone at P&G in Weybridge is incredibly proud to play our part in helping them continue this vital service in the community.”

About Shooting Star Chase

Shooting Star Chase is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families.

Whether lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years, we are here to make every moment count. We support families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

Our bespoke support is free of charge to families and available 365 days a year. Our care service includes short breaks at our two hospices (Shooting Star House in Hampton and Christopher’s in Guildford), Hospice at Home, day care, symptom management, end-of-life care, bereavement care and a comprehensive range of therapies and support groups for the whole family.

It costs £9.5 million a year just to maintain our current level of care and, with around 10% of our income coming from government funding, we rely on our supporters’ generosity to keep the service running. What’s more, we know there are many more families desperate for our vital support, so it’s crucial we raise more funds to provide more care.
